WESTVILLE COUNTRY CLUB, PAVILION
A few years ago, coming out of Covid lockdown, WCC had a need to have an outdoor gym and a church gathering place that was compliant with Covid regulations. Lisa came up with the idea of the tent; it was much cheaper than the steel structure that we had been keen on prior to Covid.
Our tent was built and paid for in a collaboration with One City Church, who used the tent to great effect. Our gym section was created and is going strong thanks to Rene Fourie. Another collaboration was formed along with Local Live who brought our beloved Barry Thompson and the Reals into the tent. We have hosted these shows every month for many months. This has become a member benefit standing loud and proud which has benefited the Community.
In addition to the monthly shows, we have hosted numerous fundraising events for schools and other charities in KZN. Suffice to say we have enjoyed what the tent had to offer. She was never pretty (the tent) and has started to show signs of aging. We have been exploring many alternatives for some time, until we stumbled on Shongweni Market’s Food Court. Once we had observed their design it was an easy choice. This is the way to go, we are confident that we can replace the tent with a more permanent structure that will give us the same benefits of the tent and much more.
This is the right time to do the construction for several reasons, the weather, the leaks in the tent would have become unbearable in the rainy season. Most importantly we have a National Squash event happening from the 5th – 8th November that will bring +-500 Masters Doubles players to Durban; WCC is the host club. We will have 3 out of the 4 nights at our Club. Construction has already begun with behind-the-scenes modifications to the gym equipment;
the gym has been moved to the Boardroom for the duration. Mike and the mechanics will strip the electrics from the tent on Monday; the tent will be removed to its new home as a Church on Tuesday. The area around the tent will become a constructions site from Wednesday, 30th July midday. I have every confidence that Kevin Banks from Dave Scates Construction will build us exactly what want in time for our forthcoming events.
